Cruise to Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, with Celebrity Cruises. One of the world’s most modern cities, it’s home to large gardens and parks, green boulevards, and opulent shopping centers.
Dhabi, United Arab Emirates
Dubai is a fascinating fusion of modern city and old world “souks,” or markets. Travel between the two by “abra,” traditional water taxis that cross Dubai Creek. The leading center for business and tourism in the Middle East, Dubai offers a distinctive blend of modern city amenities and the ancient charm of Arabia. Take a stroll and admire the stunning architecture of traditional mosques right next to ultra-modern buildings. Pick up a wonderful memento at The Souq, which is made up of various shops such as the Spice Souq, the Textile Souq and the Gold Souq.
This Arabian capital is an oasis of green lawns, shade trees, and colorful flowers in a desert country. White buildings and soaring minarets sparkle in the sun. Traditional architecture, elegant mosques, and eye-opening museums weave in Old World character. Explore forts, castles, and the Souk Muttrah, a traditional bazaar that invites you to shop for mementos.
Bombay (Mumbai), India
Bombay, a metropolis of almost 18 million people, ranges from rich to poor, cosmopolitan to traditional, and always fascinating. Bollywood produces more films here than anywhere, and this cultural hub enjoys a constant flow of music, dance, and drama. You can explore everything from exclusive international boutiques to small ethnic markets, including street foods like kebabs.
Goa (Mormugao), India
The magical state of Goa used to be an outpost of Portugal, so the palms on its beaches still sway with a certain Portuguese rhythm. The laid-back lifestyle in India’s smallest, most prosperous state attracts many world travelers. You can explore world-heritage architecture, fragrant spice plantations, and cuisine that blends Portuguese technique with Indian flavors.
New Mangalore, India
Feast your senses on the sights, sounds, and scents of New Mangalore. You can admire the work of craftsmen in the artisan village and browse local markets for photo ops. Explore a 17th-century Christian church, a 15th-century temple with a thousand carved pillars, and a former Buddhist temple dating to 1068. Go nuts for cashews, a major crop, and learn all about the tasty kernels. Stand amid a hundred-acre spice farm—peppers, cloves, cardamom, cinnamon, nutmeg—and inhale deeply. Ride to nearby Ullal and stroll the beautiful beaches.
The “Queen of the Arabian Sea,” Cochin is one of the finest natural harbors in the world. Stroll Fort Kochi beach at sunset, framed by the Chinese fishing nets, visit St. Francis Church, where Vasco de Gama was buried, and take in a Kathakali dance performance that will leave you spellbound.
Colombo, Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka’s capital brings together all the fabulous colors and cultures of this island nation. You can explore Colombo’s colonial heritage, its fine dining and shopping, and plenty of cultural and historical attractions in areas such as Fort, Cinnamon Gardens, and Pettah. Museums, zoological gardens, and the Galle Face Green Promenade offer all the art, beauty, and spectacular sunset views Sri Lanka is famous for. Take home handmade crafts, jewelry (the country is known for its spectacular sapphires), and colorful, hand-loomed textiles.
Thailand’s largest and most visited island, Phuket, offers gorgeous beaches lined with palm trees, plus fabulous coves and bays. Water sports include sailing, diving, and snorkeling. Golf enthusiasts will love the championship courses, while nature lovers will be thrilled by the tropical forests and waterfalls. Tour historic mansions and top off the day enjoying the extensive nightlife.
At first glance, this diamond-shaped island just off the coast of Malaysia gleams with modernism and commercialism, making it seem more Western than Eastern. But as you continue to discover the city-state, you’ll uncover the eclectic mix of cultures, religions, ancient treasures and British colonial impressions that give rise to a unique Singaporean identity. The cultural fusion is perhaps best expressed in Singapore’s unofficial language, Singlish, a unique patois of English, Chinese and Malay.
